Description
The Sociology major at Piedmont International University trains students to apply the sociological imagination to the world around them as they examine the relationship between social forces and individual thoughts and behavior. Sociology majors will develop strong critical thinking skills, discover multiple theoretical perspectives, and learn to analyze data in order to inform social programs, policy, and justice initiatives. Students of sociology will also have the opportunity to engage in hands-on research projects with professors and practical experience in related professions. A degree in sociology prepares students for a broad range of careers, including those in social services, the criminal justice system, and human resources, as well as graduate and professional education. According to the most recent Occupational Outlook Handbook report published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, social assistance jobs are among the fastest growing occupations, with personal care and service occupations projected to experience 17.4% growth by 2028 and 11.2% in community and social service occupations, with 3.4 million new jobs projected between social service and healthcare. Piedmont sociology majors will be well prepared to enter these sectors and will develop skills transferable to any chosen career path.
A Bachelor of Arts in Sociology will require the completion of a minimum of 50 hours of credit in designated courses.

Admissions Requirements
- A high school diploma or GED
- GPA of 2.0 or higher
- Official transcripts from all previously attended schools
- Completed application with Piedmont International University
Graduation Requirements
In order to become a candidate for graduation a student:
- Shall have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at PIU;
- Shall have maintained a minimum academic average of C (higher for some programs);
- Shall have passed all courses in his/her curriculum and made a C or better in key courses designated as essential in each program;
- Shall have completed at least 24 of the final 30 hours with Piedmont International University.
